Maryland showed plenty resolve while rallying from a 14-point deficit late in the game, however, the Spartans held on long enough to earn a spot in the Elite Eight where they squared off against Texas.

  • Maryland's Juan Dixon and Lonny Baxter led Maryland to their first national title in a hard fought battle against Indiana. The duo's combined 33 points and 19 rebounds was enough to beat the Hoosiers 64-52 and deny the storied program a sixth national title. The Terrapins’ road to becoming national champs was tough to say the least, as it included wins over five national championship programs -- Wisconsin, Kentucky, Connecticut, Kansas and Indiana. Dixon was later named the tournament's most outstanding while Maryland coach Gary Williams became the first alumnus to coach his school to the national title since 1974.

  • The Terps outlasted UConn 90-82 with strong closing performances by Juan Dixon and Lonny Baxter. Dixon, Maryland's all-time leading scorer, ended the night with 27 points and Baxter finished with 29 points and nine rebounds. Maryland went on to run the table in the next two rounds and ultimately become the 2002 national champions.

  • Duke trailed 11 points at the half but were able to pick up the pace and speed past Maryland in a 95-84 heartbreaker. Shane Battier's 25 points Jason Williams' 23 helped Duke win their 34th game of the season and book a trip to the title game where they beat the Arizona Wildcats and walked away national champs.

  • For the first time in school history, Maryland reached the Final Four after beating top-seed Stanford 87-73. The Terrapins' speed and solid outside attack was highlighted by Lonny Baxter's 24 points and Juan Dixon's 14 points in the second half alone. Despite four players shooting in the double figures, Stanford could not stop Maryland from heading to the next round and taking on the eventual 2001 national champions Duke Blue Devils.

The 76-66 win marked Maryland coach Gary Williams' first trip to the Elite Eight in his 23-year coaching career. The Terrapins went on to win in the next round but were stopped short of a title shot when they lost to Duke 95-84.
